The Shields Health and Care Centre which was completed earlier this year was officially opened last month by the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Shona Robison in the presence of Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland and Andrew Robertson the Chair of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. There were many guests enjoying the celebrations, all of whom had been involved with the planning and delivery of this new facility.
The 750m2 building provides a modern Health and Care centre for the people of East Pollokshields in Glasgow. Over two floors , it incorporates two GP practices, a range of community services, social work, health promotion and educational services for the local community. Uniquely the Centre has a community garden that is managed by Urban Roots and offers a varied programme of gardening and environmental activities that aim to promote positive health and well being.
The building located on the boundary of a conservation area is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood and its refined design reinforces the civic importance of public healthcare. The double height colonnade is partially screened by bespoke Cor-ten steel screens designed by artist Alex Hamilton.
The project formed part of the development programme of hub West Scotland with Apollo’s Campbell Halliday leading the development and delivery of its construction.
